Bipolar disorder - Better Health Channel -open

Bipolar disorder is a type of psychosis and used to be called 'manic depression'. A person with bipolar disorder experiences alternating episodes of mania and depression. The exact cause is unknown, but a genetic predisposition has been clearly established. Environmental stressors can also trigger episodes of illness.

Early help for a mental health issue can make a big difference. If you are finding feelings of anxiety, distress, sadness or other feelings difficult to overcome, or if emotional or behavioural problems significantly disrupt your life, you can get help from your doctor. Public specialist mental health services are available to assess and treat people with serious mental illness, including those experiencing a psychiatric crisis.

Mental illness - family and friends - Better Health Channel- open

Family members and friends should not ignore signs of a mental illness in someone close. Early treatment can lead to a better outcome. Encourage the person to see a general practitioner (GP) or other doctor for an assessment. If a family member is affected, you should decide what level of support and care you are realistically able to provide.
